Delegate or stagnate
Maybe you’ve heard it before but why do leaders find it so difficult to give things away? Here’s a few observations:
We find too much of our significance in what we do rather than who we are
We truly believe it will fall apart if we give it away
We are scared/threatened/insecure about the lack of control that comes when we truly delegate
Most delegation issues are a training/patience/security problem on our part not a competence problem on the part of others, but often to disguise our own faultsĀ we put it off on others (its called blame and its been around since Genesis 3). Once we blame others we place ourselves in the role of the victim and no longer see things the way they really are (deception).
The absence of delegation may indicate the presence of deception – the deception that without this duty or role we are less significant; that only we can do a particular thing or it will fall apart; or the deception that we actually have “control” in the first place.
At Elevate we are in a season of incredible growth and I’m being pushed to delegate more things to more people than ever before. Recently my staff moved on some decisions that would have previously needed at least my approval if not my total involvement. It seriously challenged me to release things at a whole new level or risk killing the growth God has so graciously brought.
Delegate or stagnate.

Seems like a simple concept but for someone like me was very difficult to get through. I needed a slap in the face, frustration, and almost the verge of burnout before I realized the importance of this idea. I felt like my way of doing things was the only right way and only I could accomplish things right and efficiently. Once I took that step towards delegating I realize there are some awesome and gifted people out there who may exceed my gifts and talents.
I have a long way to go with this concept and will be a continuous process, but love seeing the growth and expansion when we can step outside that box we close ourselves into sometimes.
