Vision Leaks

22 January 2009 290 views One Comment

Tuesday I talked about how vision speaks and pulls to itself the resources it needs to become a reality.  From there the leader’s job is to keep momentum rolling and deliver on the desired future the vision promises.

The challenge is that over time people forget, distractions arise, and life happens – in effect vision leaks. Like a tire that slowly loses pressure, you have to consistently inflate or risk going flat and stranding the entire vehicle.

A wonderful Biblical example is Nehemiah. Over the 52 days of wall rebuilding in the city of Jerusalem, Nehemiah had to remind everyone of the vision several times. In order to do that effectively, Nehemiah had to stay sharp on the vision and the same is true for leaders today.

Leaders have to keep the vision in front of them and constantly remind themselves of WHY this desired future becoming reality is important. This explains why vision-driven people are often misunderstood. They have to live seeing a different reality than those around them because we all have a slow leak valve somewhere when it comes to vision.

Vision speaks and vision leaks – understanding both of these axioms helps create needed futures that are yet invisible and makes them a reality.

Right on about vision, Adam! In one sense, vision has to become part of the culture and DNA of any leadership group or organization.

Specifically, I’ve been in churches where people have gotten behind a vision, yet over time naturally fell back into old habits and back into the “status qua.” This is because the vision wasn’t continually put in front of the church. Vision isn’t a one-time event… true vision is continuous and is constantly moving forward.

Another danger with a “leaky” vision is when leaders wait until it’s too late to pump vision back into the organization. Part of leadership is recognizing the very principle that vision does leak, like you said.
